Types of Material Handling Conveyors

Conveyor systems accomplish the task by transferring materials from one location to another. They are applied in factories, warehouses, airports, mines, ports, tunnels and many other places. Every kind is used for a different purpose. Here’s a brief overview of the most prevalent ones.

Belt Conveyor

There are two main types of industrial Conveyor Belt systems: for general materials (boxes, packages, bags, solid items or products) and for bulk materials (grain, salt, sand, ore, coal, etc). A custom Conveyor belt system is made of a wide variety of materials and is used in many different applications, not only in an industrial setting.

A Belt Conveyor can be enclosed to prevent contamination and loss of material but also be open if it is part of assembly lines. These systems are a good choice for transporting heavier loads.

Roller Conveyor

Various types of industries use Roller Conveyors to simplify the production process. Roller Conveyor is one type of Conveyor that is commonly used in industry apart from Belt Conveyors. The Roller Conveyor used usually has a variety of types and dimensions that are adjusted to the needs of each production line.

Roller Conveyors are an industrial machine whose function is to move goods from one place to another using parallel rollers. Mentioned are the most suitable Roller Conveyor applications:

  • Warehousing
  • Packaging line
  • Distribution or storage lines
  • Liaison between conveyor belts

Screw (Auger) Conveyors

One of the first Conveyors to be invented, Screw Conveyors have been around since ancient times. The mechanism of this system consists of a helical blade (screw or auger) that moves liquid or granular materials, usually within a tube. Auger conveyors are a good choice for semi-solid materials, such as:

  • Animal feed
  • Aggregates
  • Food waste
  • Wood chips
  • Meat
  • Boiler ash
  • Municipal solid waste

The rate of the material transfer is directly proportional to the rotation speed of the auger. Downsides of this conveyor system include compromised blends or breakage of the material, reduced efficiency in high inclines, and the fact that it can’t be used in spaces where multiple planes are required. At the same time, if material integrity is not of the essence (such as in transporting waste), augers have few moving parts and are easy to maintain and clean.

Chain Conveyor

Chain Conveyors, as the name implies, utilize a continuous chain to move materials along a production line. This chain glides over sprockets located at both ends and can feature specific attachments to enhance its functionality. These Conveyors excel in transporting hefty items, especially those that are notably wide, long or both. Common items transported include industrial containers, grid boxes and pallets.

Chain Conveyor systems play a vital role in the pharmaceutical and automotive sectors. Within the automotive industry, these systems are often used to transport vehicle parts through paint facilities, streamlining the paint application process. The good thing about the chain systems is that individual chain links can be replaced instead of replacing the entire chain.

Overhead Conveyor

An Overhead Conveyor represents an advanced material handling system crafted to transport parts, products, components and supplies through a motor-driven chain setup that is suspended in the air. By capitalizing on vertical space, this Conveyor system provides a highly efficient way to carry loads of diverse shapes and sizes for various operations such as processing, production, storage or placement. Overhead Conveyors prove less intrusive than other transportation methods and are particularly ideal for moving items within environments deemed hazardous or inaccessible to humans, such as ovens, paint booths, chemical handling zones, and processes like sintering.

Slat Conveyor

Slat Conveyors use a slat and chain system to move components along an assembly line. They are often used where production operations are performed with the parts located on the Conveyor. Steel panels are attached to the chain with special chain attachments, and the chain is driven by an electric motor and gearbox. Therefore, they are one of the most commonly used types of Conveyor for moving parts along and assembly line while the work is being performed. They are ideally suited to applications where components are being assembled onto a fixture located at an ergonomic working height.

Slat Conveyor system also allow production assembly operators to work on one or both sides of the line. Fixtures can be added to the slats to enable parts to rotate 90, 180 or 360 degrees to facilitate better ergonomic access.

Pneumatic Conveyor

Pneumatic Conveyor systems are designed to move dry bulk materials using either positive air pressure or a vacuum. These systems primarily consist of four main components, an air source, a material feeding mechanism, a conveyance line, and an air and material separation unit. These components work together to efficiently transport materials from one location to another, ensuring a smooth and consistent transfer process.

Pneumatic Conveyors transport materials within a completely sealed system, greatly reducing the chance of material wastage. They are most effective when used with fine, dry powders that can easily be fluidized through air pressure or vacuum. Some pelletized or granular materials are also good options. Pneumatic conveying systems are a good fit for:

  • Sugar
  • Starch
  • Wheat flour
  • Food products
  • Sands
  • Metal powders
  • Coal fines

Bucket Conveyor Systems

Bucket Conveyor systems belong in the vertical Conveyor category. They are meant to move flowable bulk material loads (such as fertilizer or specialty grain) upwards inside a series of buckets (multi-sided containers). Aside from the buckets, an elevator also needs a belt to carry the buckets and transmit the pull.

It needs a power source to drive the belt and accessories for collecting the material, loading the buckets, receiving the discharged material and enclosing the elevator if needed. Bucket Conveyor systems have low driving power and are, therefore, quite efficient.

Sandwich Belt High Angle Conveyor

A Sandwich Belt Conveyor uses two Conveyor Belts, face-to-face, to gently but firmly contain the product being carried, hence making steep incline and even vertical-lift runs easily achievable.

DSI Snake Sandwich Belt Conveyors are available in widely ranging profiles of C and S-Shape. In any case, a long bottom belt approach is possible to the sandwich entrance, and discharge may be on the high incline or may be after the extension of the carrying belt beyond the mouth of the sandwich.

The DSI Snake hugs the bulk materials by the use of radial pressure which is due to the belt tension and the alternating curving profile geometry. Materials are conveyed along the convex curves in a ‘snaking’ profile as they are elevated to the highest of angles.

Capacity is unlimited for a Sandwich Belt High Angle Conveyor.  All conventional Conveyor parts allow for unlimited belt widths available to 3000mm wide and beyond.  With wide belts at typical belt speed, rates can exceed 10,000 t/h.

Sandwich Belt High Angle Conveyor Advantages over the others:

  • Unlimited conveying capacity.
  • A system suitable for the most rugged mine applications, yet gentle on sensitive and friable materials.
  • High availability and low operating and maintenance cost.
  • Smooth surfaced belts allow continuous belt cleaning by scrapers and plows.
  • Facilitates intermediate material discharge by belt plows, as appropriate, before and/or beyond the sandwiched part of the snaking profile.
  • All conventional conveyor hardware ensures economy and fast delivery of replacement parts.

Aerial Ropeway Conveyor

This high-capacity, maintenance-friendly conveying system for challenging terrain transports bulk materials and unit loads of all kinds, crosses obstacles with ease and minimizes the structural footprint on the ground.

This system combines proven Aerial Ropeway engineering with continuous Conveyor technology. It transports the material on a flat belt with corrugated side walls. The belt performs the haulage function. It is fixed to axles with plastic running wheels at either end. These run on track ropes with fixed anchoring and guide the belt. As in the case of an Aerial Ropeway, the track ropes are elevated off the ground on tower structures.

  • Perfect for challenging or sensitive terrain
  • Low emissions and low energy consumption
  • Transport capacities up to 25,000 t/h
  • Material transport solution with high availability
  • Tower spacing up to 2,500 m
